Janet Ledger was born in Northampton in 1931. She studied at Northampton School of Art. Often compared with L S Lowry, who she had met, her misty industrial landscapes and paintings of people have a marvelous feeling for atmosphere and colour combined with a strong sense of observation of life. The humour and pathos she evokes adds a dimension, which allows the onlooker a momentary smile. Nothing escapes her notice, whether it be on holiday or at work, children at play or at school, the washing on the line, a city skyline at night, or the corner shops and back streets populated by buses, dogs, lamp posts, the occasional drunk or shoppers with prams.
Janet has exhibited worldwide, and her work is in many private and public collections including HRH Princess Margaret, the Tate Gallery, National Westminster Bank, Marks & Spencer, the National Coal Board and McDonalds PLC. Janet has had nine solo exhibitions with the Linda Blackstone Gallery since 1985.
