Paul Talbot
Paul Talbot is predominately a text-based artist working within the field of painting. The used language stimulates a visual response and conceptual framework; at times it directs the development of a piece, at others it disrupts or interferes with it. Through this tension, he explores how meaning is constructed, obscured and revealed. Meaning is never fixed – it flickers, shifts, and reforms across the surface of the artwork
He engages in a range of mixed-media, painting, printmaking and drawing. He embraces process as a form of enquiry. Materials are tested, surfaces disrupted and repetition becomes rhythm. His work invites the viewer to pause, decipher or respond more instinctively to a piece – with a subtle balance between seriousness and wit. The outcome can be conceptually challenging, quietly humorous, prompt reflection or an unexpected smile.
After a career spanning more than thirty-seven years in education, Talbot transitioned to full-time artistic practice following his retirement in December 2024. This shift has enabled sustained engagement in a studio-based practice rooted by his undergraduate studies, supporting a more reflective and research-driven approach to making. Research and self-directed learning remain central to his development, informing both conceptual direction and technical processes.
Participation in open calls and competitive exhibitions plays a significant role in situating his work within a wider contemporary context. During 2025, his work was exhibited in galleries and shows across Yorkshire, UK, Europe, America, and Asia, with over thirty-five works entering public and private collections.
The establishment of a bespoke studio has provided a dedicated environment for sustained experimentation and production. His practice continues to evolve through ongoing research, exhibition opportunities and the development of future solo presentations.
BA (Hons) Fine Art painting with Printmaking Maidstone College of Art 1987
He is a member of WYPW, North Art and VAA
