MEREDITH COOPER
“The mountain lake cradles earth, sky, and light, where both gods and soul reside.”
Meredith Cooper’s Mountain in the Lake paintings are the culmination of years of exploration into the universal sublime. Working thematically, she develops large-scale oil paintings that take shape over extended periods.
Her process begins in the wild hiking, sketching en plein air, and documenting field trips with photography. Back in the studio, she refines these impressions through carbon pencil sketches and expressive watercolours, experimenting with composition, colour, and light. From these studies, she determines which works will evolve into larger-scale pieces, sometimes beginning with gouache or conte pastel on paper before moving to oil on canvas or linen.
Building the paintings in layered stages, Cooper often works on multiple canvases at once, allowing each layer to dry before intensifying the colours. This gradual process creates a rich, oscillating surface—blurring the line between realism and impressionism, figuration and abstraction. The interplay of dynamic diagonals and tonal gradations draws the viewer in, balancing the real with the imagined, evoking landscapes that verge on dreamscapes.
Through these works, Cooper transforms physical spaces into spiritual realms, capturing a sense of mystery and beauty. Her paintings embody abstract concepts of spirituality, offering viewers a profound, immersive experience.
