Orpheus | Mixed Media on Linked Paper | 59 x 84 cm | Framed 69 x 89.4 cm
This piece is about the Orpheus robots that explore the deepest ocean trenches in the Hadal Zone. “Hadal” comes from “Hades” the God of the Underworld. The robots are called Orpheus as in the myth Orpheus was able to charm his way out of the Underworld by way of his musical talent. Esther did her dissertation on the Orpheus Myth at University so he has always been close to her heart. She tried to replicate the undulations of the current and underwater trenches in the three dimensional composition. The piece is fluid and only attached in a very few places.
