Amelia Frances Wood is an artist living and working in Leeds. Graduating Leeds Arts University in 2019 she was shortlisted with Commendations for the Kenneth Armitage Sculpture Award and was awarded a Graduate Residency at the Art House, Wakefield showcasing sculptures alongside artists Many Gamsu and Charlotte Southall at the Wakefield Art Walk.
The Winner of the Aon Community Art Award 2021. Since then Amelia has been contributing to the artist ecology in Leeds developing exciting emerging sculpture in the City. She undertook a commission from Leeds2023 for a public sculpture in Gotts Park, “Armley Horses” in collaboration with artist Rosie Vohr and community group Hookers and Clickers.
Amelia Frances Wood is the founder of “See You Naked” Mondays, a non-traditional Life Drawing Class held every Monday at Left Bank, a progressive space for creativity and community. A Studio holder at Assembly House, a converted textile mill where she and artist Lily Lavorato exhibited “A Passing Place” the first dedicated sculpture exhibition in Assembly House’s seven year history, supported by Leeds Inspired and Leeds Art Gallery.
Using sculpture, textile, drawing and symbolic objects, Wood creates anthropomorphic sculptures. These are layered with references to the body, earth and ritual. She gains inspiration from the figure, exploring a deeper connection to our bodies. She does this working holistically to produce figurative explorations of her experience inside her own body connected spiritually to her own state of being. They skirt the line between 2D and 3D and can be imagined as transcendent drawings coming to life.
