Mat Barber Kennedy was born in London in 1962. He studied architecture at Sheffield University and the Royal College of Art, London. It was during this time that he started to explore the subject and the process of design through paintings. Since graduating, in 1988 with a Masters Degree, he has travelled extensively, making the drawings and paintings which are the source for all of his work. He became a full time painter in 1990. He was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in1994.
The artist investigates the beauty of the everyday urban environment and reflects a fascination with bricks and mortar, plaster, concrete and steel. Like candid photography the paintings capture moments in the lives of ordinary buildings, unselfconsciously growing old with their inhabitants.
Barber Kennedy and his family currently live in Chicago, USA.
In March 2008 Mat Barber Kennedy was the recipient of the prestigious Gold Medal for the best set of work at the annual exhibition of members of the RI at the Mall Galleries, London
